May Web Tip - Business Blogging

This month's web tip is about blogging for NZ businesses. The full 3 part article is on our NZ Business Hub and below are the key points. Firstly there are many good reasons to start a blog for your business. Blogs can generate more traffic and provide fresh content for your customers and search engines yet the most common excuses for not blogging are I don't have time or I don't know what to write. So we've put together a table that shows anyone can blog with the right tools.

I am a Business Owner that... Blog tool to use
has no time Twitter  - you only need to write up to 140 characters. Even President Obama has time for this and you can tweet from your cell phone.
doesn't like to write Photo Blog e.g. FotoLog - Who said that blogs have to be written in words. You can blog in photos or even video too.
loves to write Blogger or Wordpress  - easy to use & great  search visibility perfect for active bloggers.
has lots of business networks Social Networking/Community group  - use your networks as your audience. Many social networking websites have free blogs e.g. sharemyNZ

Top 3 Tips on Blogging:

  1. List your blog on a blog directory e.g. Kiwiology (good NZ blog directory) or blogorama
  2. Make your blog posts search engine friendly i.e. choose good keywords for the title and content
  3. Comment on other blogs and link back to your own blog to increase your audience

Examples of good business blogs from 'The Kiwi Story' businesses:

  1. NZ Art Guild - NZ Art community
  2. Deanna Gracie Contemporary Jewellery - Unique New Zealand made jewellery
  3. DIYFather - Fathers parenting guide website
  4. endemicworld.com - NZ online design store
  5. Scamps Eco Boutique - Earth friendly online store

NZ Business Hub

Our NZ Business Hub is off to a great start. It has been a popular read with May visitors and is currently ranked 12th for a search for the term [NZ Business News] ahead of big sites such as Yahoo!Xtra and TV3 news. Further our articles are fully optimised and are also receiving excellent search visibility. We have improved the categorising and navigation and aim to keep improving the hub each month so keep an eye on the NZ Business Hub and stay tuned!

Who Stole My Money

Late last year we featured an exciting award winning kiwi business Who Stole My Money - An online personal budgeting tool. This year they have continued their winning form into 2009 and were recently announced the New Zealand winner of the Technium Challenge - a prestigious international business plan competition. They will now represent New Zealand this month at the global finals in Wales.

NZ businesses have a strong track record at the competition with former winners including top kiwi businesses TracPlus Global and Xero. We wish Grace and the team at Who Stole My Money the very best in representing New Zealand. You can find out all about Who Stole My Money on their website www.whostolemymoney.com

Bizzone Business Expo

This week the Bizzone business expo starts in Auckland. The Bizzone Business Expo (formerly the Small Business Expo) is a popular business event for networking and finding new business resources. Particularly useful is the free business mentoring available and free national bank seminar series.

This year's theme is on smart marketing so there is sure to be lots of marketing advice and resources available. 'The Kiwi Story' was launched out of the expo last year and we have written an article on exhibiting at trade shows based on our experience which is on the NZ Business Hub. If you are in Auckland this week check out the expo. Many of 'The Kiwi Story' businesses are exhibiting including Earth Angel, Hire Plants and Business on Film. For details and dates visit the Bizzone website. Wellington and Christchurch expos will follow in July and August respectively.

The Next Chapter...

We'll also be adding new website categories, cover website linking as our web tip of the month and bring you more from our NZ Business Hub. We are also very excited with the growing activity from 'The Kiwi Story' community we appreciate all the news/email updates and will continue to add community news through our newsletters, blog and twitter page.
